James was the son of David and Mary Alden, the second of seven children. In 1856 the family moved to Henry County, Illinois. His father died in 1864 when James was age 15.
The family moved to Page County, Iowa, in the spring of 1871. In 1874 James came to Essex, Page County, Iowa. He married Delia B Woodford on 19 Oct 1876 in Essex. While living in Essex, James was engaged in the lumber business.
The family later moved to Shenandoah, Page County, Iowa.
James died in 1904 at the age of 55 years.
