William was killed on the afternoon of May 14, 1864, at the Battle of Resaca, GA, when a shell burst near him, penetrating the body near the heart and killing him instantly. He was buried as decently as circumstances allowed with the Letter of his Co. and No. of his regiment to mark the spot where he lay. Obtained from a copy of the letter sent to his parent to announce his death.

According to his pension file, he left a widow and child. He married Sophia Graham 28 Mar 1859 in Henry County, Illinois. They had one child, Frank M. Follett, born 21 Oct 1860. In 1866, Sophia applied for an increase in pension as a resident of Oneida County, New York. Sophia died in 1905.
