Albert P Faucette

Born 1844, he lived to the age of 63 years old, passing away at his home in West Durham, North Carolina a few days ago. Albert P. Faucette was a good citizen, an affectionate father, and husband, and in the war between the States, a brave soldier. He was of a gentle nature, gentle as a woman in his manners, yet when occasion and duty demanded it, he was as courageous as a lion, utterly fearless and invincible. He was in some of the most notable battles, and was six times wounded in the Civil war. His record as a soldier is one of which any veteran may be proud. I have heard it said amid shot and shells he would laugh in the very face of danger, chiding or teasing his comrades for dodging, and that, when so wounded himself that he could not stand on his feet he would rise upon his knees and shoot at the enemy. Indeed, his courage was of so fine a quality, that the Hon. Tom Ruffin once said: "It every man in the Confederate Army had been as brave as A. P. Faucette the South have won the war with ease."

We are accustomed to think that the influence of a quiet man, keeping the even tenor of his way, is lost amid the noise and confusion of this busy, hustling world, but it is not, and Carlyle, in his great essay on Burns, reminds us that while the Shakespeare and Milton roll on like mighty rivers through the continent of thought, the weary traveler will turn aside to such a gushing little fountain as Burns, and there quench his thirst. So while American youths may, and do, and should admire the greatness, the true hero-spirit of Lincoln and Lee, they will likewise find inspiration and encouragement in the life of A. P. Faucette. Great in life, amid its storms, he was also great, and patient and serene in suffering. Stricken with paralysis he lay through months and weeks helpless. if not hopeless, yet his chief concern was not death, but that he should part with those he so fondly loved; as for himself he looked beyond the silent stars and knew there was for him a final home.

Such a man was Albert P. Faucette, and the writer hopes that the life of this truly good man may be an inspiration to others to go and do likewise. Shakespeare makes Mark Antony say that "the evil that men do lives after them, the good is oft interred with their bones." But the Bard of Avalon knew that the influence of a well spent life is imperishable, if one stormy, dark night, he sees a small candle in the distance, and says: "How far that little candle throws its beams, so shines a good deed in a naughty world. Such was the life of A. P. Faucette, he was a light not hid under a bushel, and his deeds, and the memory of them must abide.

It was a modest, quiet unassuming life that has just closed. In public life he was perfectly harmless, always peaceable, and law-abiding. In private life he was pure, kind and upright. I think I never saw him in a passion; he was cool, thoughtful, and ready to act when the moment arrived. In consideration he was often in an argumentative mood, but never got in a rage. He was not without a sense of humor and wit, though I never heard of his trying to wound the feelings of another. On one occasion he was talking to a young man he seemed to like quite well, and said, 'There are some people up in yank country by your name but they are nice people." Of course the joke was taken in the spirit of fun, and it was meant to be even. Frequently he entered a building where there were several friends and one would cry out "turn out the dogs, turn on the fire alarm," but apparently not noticing the cry, he entered the room, took up a paper and began reading. If a volcano had burst forth at his feet there is some doubt that it would alarm "Job" Faucette. Indeed we wonder that such a man made a good soldier. Coming in one day in his every day clothes, and with his long beard, he looked like a Rip Van Winkle. The question arose where did you get him or where did you find him? "Why I dug him out of the ground." Faucette's mild reply was, yes, diamonds and precious things are dug out of the ground."

But death has claimed him, as it will eventually claim us all, and we might well wish that our life should be so spent that when called to go, that we might be as well prepared, and leave a record as untarnished as A. P. Faucette. What our country is in sore need of today is men with a conscience, men of integrity, men of character, brave in war and peace, and men that love the home.
