William Denton joined the Union Army in 1862 with his brother John Denton. They were in Co. M, 2nd TN Cav where they served until 1865. William was 16 when he joined.

William had 18 children, 10 by his first wife, Elizabeth J. Fox, and 8 by his second wife, Laura Virginia Trotter.

On 7 Aug. 1866 in Sevier Co., TN William married Elizabeth J. Fox, daughter of Eli H. Fox and Hettie Bird Fox. They had 10 children:
