Kaspar Thraen immigrated in 1847 on the ship Leibwitz. A shoemaker by trade, he settled in Peru, Illinois. He filed for naturalization in 1851, which was finalized in 1855. He Americanized his name to Casper Thran and married Margaretha Herman in 1852. They had six children, four of whom lived to adulthood. In September 1864 Casper was drafted by the Union Army. His oldest child would have been around age 10, the youngest age 2. He was assigned to Company A of the 44th Regiment in the Illinois Infantry. In October 1864 he was sent to Chattanooga TN to meet up with the rest of his regiment known as the Army of Cumberland. They were ordered to Athens, Alabama, and eventually up to Nashville, Tennessee. Casper fought with his regiment in the Battle of Nashville. Following this battle his regiment was sent to Huntsville, Alabama. A memorial plaque has been erected in the old train depot in downtown Huntsville with Casper's name listed. By June 1865 the status of his regiment had changed. The Army of Cumberland was no longer, and the confederates of Virginia had surrendered to General Grant. Casper was one of the very few soldiers who were mustered out of the Union Army. He returned home to his wife and children a battered man. Casper filed for a military pension was listed as an invalid. His death certificate indicates he died from a bacterial infection of the respiratory/nervous system. Margaretha filed for a widow's pension which was granted. Casper must have suffered horribly and been in tremendous pain. Thank you, Grandfather, for your service to your adopted country. Bravery at its finest.
