JOHN C. PIERCE, SOLDIER OF '62, DIES AT HOME

Aged Veteran Lost Last Battle After Breaking Leg in a Fall

John Calvin Pierce, 87-year-old veteran of the Civil war, familiarly known in Kirksville as "Cap" died last night at his home, 509 East Washington street at 9 o'clock. His death resulted indirectly from a fall on April 6th this year in which his right leg, which had previously been paralyzed, was broken.

Funeral services will be held at 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Summers & Son Funeral Home, and burial will be made in Llewellyn cemetery.

Mr. Pierce was born March 23, 1842 in Illinois and moved to Missouri in 1890, locating on a farm near Tipperary, and later operating a livery business in Kirksville. He married Miss Emma L. Kent Dec. 25, 1867, who died June 22, 1923.

Five children were born, three of whom are dead. The two surviving are Mrs. Mollie Sleeth, of Spokane, Wash., and Miss Nellson Pierce, of Kirksville. There are four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

"Cap" Pierce served four years in the Union army with the 23rd Illinois Infantry.
