Ehlermann, a manufacturer, was born in Germany. He arrived in the U.S. at the age of 14 on the eve of the Civil War. One of his uncles was a partner in the firm of Wattenberg, Busch & Company, of which the famous brewer Adolphus Busch was also a member. Ehlermann entered their employ as an office boy, but within a year he was promoted to bookkeeper. He later became city salesman as well as bookkeeper. He succeeded so well in the position of salesman that he was assigned to duty as a traveling salesman. After he quit the hops & malt manufacturing company, he formed "The Charles Ehlermann Hop and Malt Company", eventually becoming the president.
