Cherokee Indian leader and Delaware County judge, died Thursday in Washington, D.C., of a heart attack. Bushyhead, son of Dr. J.C. Bushyhead, pioneer Rogers County physician, and grandson of Cherokee Chief Dennis Wolf Bushyhead, lived much of his life in Claremore where he was born. He served two terms as Rogers County attorney and one term each in the state Senate and House of Representatives. He was the Democratic nominee for Congress from the 1st District in 1944.
Bushyhead was one of four attorneys who represented the Cherokees in winning a $14 million claim involving 6 million acres of land in northwest Oklahoma. The U.S. Court of Claims ruled in January the four attorneys were entitled to more than $1 million in legal fees.
Last Monday, Bushyhead and one of the other attorneys, Paul M. Niebell of Washington, met with government attorneys for preliminary discussions about possible settlement of another Cherokee claim involving lands in Osage County.
His widow, Christine, survives.
The funeral and burial will be in Claremore. (Miami News Records, March 11, 1966)
