Hermine was born in Independence Ohio, to the Reverend Johannes Strieter, a Lutheran minister and circuit rider, born in 1829 in Affalterbach, Germany, and Elizabeth Ernst, born in 1838 in Brownshelm, Ohio, to German immigrants.

In November of 1881 she married Theodore Volberding. They had six children together:

Ernest, 1882-1944
Alfred, 1884-1945; Manager of the Murray Hotel
Lucy (Hildebrandt), b. 1886
Elmer, 1888-1931
Lillian (Moeller), 1890-1932
Ada (McCrary), b. 1898

She spent her final years living in Livingston, Montana, with her family and is buried next to her husband, son Ernest, and daughter-in-law Merle.
