Kathryne Atkins Hughes, 90, went to be with Our Lord November 29, 2004. She was originally from Northport, Alabama, and moved to Jacksonville 61 years ago. She retired from Southern Bell and was a member of Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church. She was a past president of the Baptist Auxiliary where she did thousands of hours of volunteer work. She was preceded in death by her husband H. Howard Hughes. Survivors include her son, Joe H. Hughes, Sr. (Linda); a sister, Margaret Hamner of Northport, Alabama; a grandson, Joe H. "Chip" Hughes, Jr. (Deborah); and two great-grandchildren, Shelby N. Hughes and Jason C. Hughes. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 2nd, at Oaklawn Cemetery, with Pastor Gregory Pope officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday (today) at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 4115 Hendricks Avenue. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida. --Florida Times, December 1, 2004
