HOWE, 123194, ALLEN H. enlisted June 15, 1917. Killed in action June 8, 1918, by G8W in the Bois de Belleau Wood France. In line of duty. Character that would have been awd. [awarded] if discharged "Excellent." Location and number of grave unknown.
[from Marineparents.com] "A French officer ordered the Marines to do the same [as they at Belleau Wood]. Captain Lloyd Williams, of the 5th Marine Regiment, refused to do so, replying, 'Retreat, Hell! We just got here.'"
