George James Garrett was born on June 23, 1867 in the Southwark section of London, near London Bridge at 15 Ewer Street, the son of Richard Garrett and Elizabeth Maher.
He had been in the British Navy when a Water Boiler had exploded. He had to be hospitalized and when the ship left, abandoning him ,it was then that he decided to stay in the states.
He met and later married Emma Andersdotter from Sweden in 1890. They had 5 children: Robert born December 15, 1890, Alfred born on August 7, 1892, Alice born on December 7, 1894, Bernard born on September 14, 1897 and Anna Elizabeth born on April 26, 1909.
George worked for the railroad and a number of other jobs. One of his jobs on the railroad was at Crookhorn, a switch bridge for the railroad between Ocean City and Marmora, New Jersey. The family lived at the house there.
George also worked a little in politics and the voting board.
