Wathen W. Bottom, 73, longtime Bardstown businessman, died Tuesday, Sept. 17, 1991 at Flaget Memorial Hospital. Bottom, a watchmaker and jeweler, moved to Bardstwon from Harrodsburg in 1943 and opened Wathen Bottom Jewelers on North Third Street, across from its present location. He was a former Bardstown Little League Baseball commissioner. He was a member and manager of The Bardstownians, a local band that played for area dances in the 1950's and '60s. Ned Johnson Sr., who coached Little League while Bottom was commissioner, said Bottom "did a tremendous job". "He was a top man", John son said, "you couldn't want any better". He was a member of the Bardstown Christian Church(Disciples of Christ), a past master and trustee of Duvall Masonic Lodge No. 6 and of the Red and Blue Lodge and a member of the Bardstown Kiwanis Club. Survivors include his wife , the former Ida Rose Sanford; one daughter Mrs. Charles (Phyllis) Cole of Kansas; two sons, Larry Bottom of Orlando, Fla., and Alan Bottom of Louisville; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at noon today at the Mann and Greenwell Funeral Home, with burial in the Bardstown Cemetery. The Rev,. Robert L. Cook will officiate. Pallbearers will be former band members George Bucci, Bill Polley, Johnny A. Newton, Charles Wathen and R.K. Greenwell, and Norman Green, Dale Payne and Harry Settles. A Masonic service was conducted Thursday evening at the Mann and Greenwell Funeral Home.
