Son of John W. Sansom (1810–1860) and Mary Ann McQueen (1810–1845). Married twice. First married Susana Agnes Boseman/Bozeman (1849-1888) on 23 July 1868 in Crenshaw County, Alabama. From this union they had the following known children: John (1869–1880), James Bunyan (1870–1961), John Benjamin (1875–1883), Cora Eula (1877–1961), Jerry Coley (1877–1963), Mary (1885–1901), and Thomas Earl (1885–1964). He secondly married Sarah Jane Elizabeth Beck on 9 February 1891 in Crenshaw County, Alabama and from this union had the following known children: Suzanna A. (b.1893), William Tillman (1897–1970), Dewey Hobson (1899–1976), annd Allie L. (b.1901).

Benjamin, age 19, enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 20 February 1863 at Troy Alabama. He was mustered on 10 March 1863 near Montgomery, Alabama as a Private in Clanton's Battery, Alabama Light Artillery. He was paroled on 26 May 1865 at Montgomery, Alabama at which time he was described as 5 feet and 8 inches tall, dark complexion, dark hair and blue eyes.
