Genealogical History of the Hoyt, Haight, and Hight Families. By David W. Hoyt. Providence, Providence Press Co, 1871,

"He owned and occupied the "Old Indian House," at Deerfield. This house was occupied by a family named Sheldon when the town was destroyed in 1704, but came into the possession of the Hoyt family about 1742. It was taken down in 1848; but the old door, battered and cut by the Indians' tomahawks, is still preserved." (page 351)

From Historic Deerfield: Houses and Interiors by Samuel Chamberlain and Henry N. Flynt, Hastings House, NY, 1965

During the early days of the Revolution, David Hoyt ran the Old Indian House as a tavern. It served as a Tory headquarters, just opposite the Saxton tavern which was the gathering place for the Whigs. The village Common was the scene of many a scuffle between the two. (page 60)

The struggle for independence began and split the village population into two camps. Divergence of opinion between the Whigs and the Tories became acute. Excited gatherings took place at the rival taverns, especially on the day when the weekly courier arrived on horseback from Boston. He stopped regularly at David Hoyt's Tavern to change horses before proceeding westward and he brought the latest news of the uprising. (page 15)

Message from a descendant regarding 2nd marriage of David Hoyt: "According to the record of Deerfield Marriages in the EVRMA (Early Vital Records of MA pre-1849,) David Hoit married Silence King in Deerfield, Franklin Co. on April 25th, 1754 and my ancestor, David Hoyt (Jr.) is one of the children of this marriage. It makes sense to me that since David Hoyt (b.1722), who lost his wife Mercy when he was ony 29, would have remarried and did so in 1754. The record of this marriage can be found in EVR of MA Deerfield Marriages Vol. 1 p 199 under Hoit or p.205 under King. The record of the birth of David Hoit, November 17th, 1757, can be found in Deerfield Brths EVR of MA Vol.1 p. 77."
