He was the third child of Joseph Harrison Posey, Sr. and Caroline Winter Cobey.

Company F "Vernon Guards," 2nd Louisiana Infantry, Johnson's Division, 2nd Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, C.S.A.

Enlisted for 1 year's service 5/9/1861 in New Orleans, LA, he traveled to Camp Moore, LA, where he was mustered into Company F," 2nd Louisiana Infantry, as a Private.
Listed on May 9 to June 30, 1861 Roll as "Absent, In Hospital at Yorktown."
Present on all subsequent Rolls through Nov & Dec 1862 Roll; "Promoted by seniority Nov. 25, 1862" to 2nd LT.
Listed on Jan & Feb 1863 Roll as, "Absent with 30 days' leave dating from 17 Feb 1863; was on his way back to Virginia on 27 Mar 1863 when he wrote a letter home while in Brookhaven, Mississippi.
Present on all subsequent Rolls until Mortally Wounded In Action 5/3/1863 in the Battle of Chancellorsville, VA.

The 2nd Infantry Regiment [also called Louisiana Zouaves] was formed at Camp Moore in Tangipahoa, Louisiana, during the spring of 1861. Its companies were drawn from De Soto, Natchitoches, Lincoln, St. Landry, Claiborne, Rapides, and Caddo parishes.
It reported 15 killed and 90 wounded at Chancellorsville.
