At 104 she says she beat the system by being retired longer than she worked.
She was born July 5, 1907, to John Christian and Georgina Taylor Schmederman. Teddy Roosevelt was president and a first-class stamp cost 2 cents.
At 104 she still discusses politics, moral issues,historical events and is very interested in the world around her.
The fourth of seven children, she was born in Junction City, KS and lived there until she was 9. The family then moved to Lyons, KS where the 3rd,4th,& 5th grades were in the same classroom.
In addition to baseball at recess, they also played "war" during World War I, using broomsticks to practice military maneuvers and marched around the schoolyard.
At Lyons High School, English was her favorite subject. During her senior year, she wrote a regular article for the school newspaper titled the "Spotlight Spuddles".
When she graduated in 1926, the high school had an enrollment of 350 students. The graduation ceremony was held at City Hall. She was a cheerleader and the football team was undefeated. About school she said, "You went to class and you shut your mouth and let the teacher teach. What the teacher said was law and you did not argue with the teacher" !
In 1933 she moved to California, returning to Lyons several times to visit family and attend school reunions. Her last visit was in 1996 for her 70th class reunion.
In 1937, she married Joseph Phillip Frushone who was an attorney in Colton. She has a stepson who lives on the East Coast.
The accomplishment that Nora was most proud of was her career in nursing. She spent 32 years at Patton State Hospital, a state psychiatric hospital in Highland, where she was supervisor of the operating room for 15 years. The other 17 years she worked as a supervisor and teacher an was assistant to the director of nurses.
In 1957, at the age of 50, she earned her bachelor's degree in nursing from the Loma Linda University.
That big smile covers her face as she recalls:
Good times at the Sunday School picnic,
the time the cyclone torn the roof off the school building,
the names of the businesses on the town square,
the floor plan of the school buildings,
people she knew in the 1920s,
getting her nose broke in gym class,
passing math because of the wonderful teacher, Mr. Williams,
and singing in the Methodist Church choir only because her best friend, Allen, insisted she join.
She was an active member of many organizations including the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Leanora was the Proud Descendant of Revolutionary War Patriot Dedrick Hickman PA PVT PS (1758-1796).
She served as Regent of the San Bernardino Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (1977-1979) and was a Charter Member of the Arrowhead Valley Chapter.
