Son of Ransom and Margaret Brooks VanWinkle.
Married 1: Henrietta Keplinger,the daughter of Samuel Keplinger.

Three children from this marriage:
Mary H. born in Feb.1864
Twin boys: Homer A. and Horace U. born Dec.11, 1865. Horace died in 1870.

In 1890, he married Melissa J. Criswell.

Alexander spent 6 years in the Gold fields in California, where he was a miner and stock raiser. In 1858, he returned to Illinois. In 1861, he enlisted in the army-
CO. B 10th ILLINOIS INF.
Re-enlisted in Aug. 1861 in the 32nd Ill.Inf, where he was appointed Sargeant Major.

Educated in the Franklin schools. Graduated from McKendree College in Lebanon, IL. He was a farmer and a school teacher.
