MORGANTON, April 6. - Edgar Lafayette Abernethy, sixty-three, well-known resident of Avery avenue, Morganton, died in a Statesville hospital at 6:30 p.m. Monday after several years of declining health and a critical illness of two weeks.
Mr. Abernethy was born in Hickory, a son of prominent pioneer families. His parents were the late Adolphus Abernethy and Alice Shuford Abernethy.
Moving to Morganton, he was prominently associated in the livestock business here.
Surviving are his wife, the former Miss Elizabeth McDowell, whom he married November 13, 1912; two daughters, Mrs. D. P. Lillis of Philadelphia, Pa., and Mrs. Clark Connelly of the home; five sisters, Mrs. J. H. P. Cilley, Mrs. Walker Lyerly and Mrs. Thomas Clay of Hickory, Mrs. Richard Parker of Murphy and Mrs. Dan Chatham of Winston Salem, and one brother, Fred Abernethy of Hickory.
Mr. Abernethy was a member of the Presbyterian church and funeral services will be conducted here at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, with the pastor of the First Prebyterian church here, Rev. J. B. Clower, officiating. Burial will be made in Forest Hill cemetery, Morganton.
