David's parents were John and Polly (Danner) Wise. His parents came to Pickaway County when he was 6. Except for ca. 10 years in Cincinnati he lived in Pickaway County the rest of his life. While in Cincinnati he made several trips to New Orleans on flat boats and log rafts. He married Mahala in 1859 after the death of his first wife Elmira Moyer. He was rejected for service in the Civil War because of a crippled arm. He worked as a barn carpenter until retiring at age 80.
