Walter was active in politics in Wellington and was mayor of the village for nine years. In 1907 he ran against one other candidate on a platform to turn Wellington into a "wet" town and serve liquor. According to an article in The Elyria Chronicle Telegram of November 6, 1907, page 1, column 2, he won by 23 votes. Walter was a member of the Wellington City Council and Mayor from 1904-1913.
The following obituary appeared in The Chronicle Telegram, Elyria, Lorain County, Ohio on April 8, 1927:
"W. D. Hall, Former Mayor Taken By Death-
Wellington, O., April 8-
Walter D. Hall, for nine years mayor of this village and one of its best known and respected citizens died at his home on Prospect St. Thursday morning, after an extended illness. He was 73 years of age. Mr. Hall was the oldest living past master of the Wellington Lodge F. and A. M. and past M.E.H.P. of the R. A. M. Lodge. He was the first past patron of Temple chapter O.E.S.
Besides his wife, two children survive: Mrs. Ethel Morrison of this place and Dr. W. F. Hall of Cleveland.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the home. Services will be in charge of the Masonic order. Burial will be made here."
