Theophilus Hall was the ninth of twelve children born to Avery Hall and Lucy Bacon on May 15, 1821, in Meriden, New Haven County, Connecticut or in Great Barren, Massachusetts, as his family moved to Ohio. He married Electa Dunbar, daughter of John Dunbar, on January 8, 1845, and together they had at least five children: Lorinda Matilda, Wilber William, Walter D., Herbert Watson, and Arthur Dunbar.

He was a famer and carpenter his entire life and was mentioned in his father's will of March 13, 1856, and the estate papers from the probate court in 1858.

He died on February 12, 1897, in Wellington, Lorain County, Ohio. In 1900 Electa, 77, was living with her son, Herbert W., in Wellington, Ohio, and his family. He and Electa were in a photograph with Lorinda Hall and her family in Burlingame, Kansas, along with Lorinda's youngest son Eddie and his family.
