C. Franklin Houk, 89, of Ludington, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 12 at Ludington Woods Living Center.
Charles Franklin Houk was born in Mason County on Aug. 22, 1918 to John and Lillian (Smith) Houk.
He was married on June 18, 1942 to Elsa Mae Wrege at the Presidio Army Base Chapel in San Francisco and she survives.
Franklin was a World War II bomber pilot, promoted to captain. He flew a B-17 in the 381st Bomb Group in the European Theatre. He received the Purple Heart during combat.
Following the war, he returned to the family farm and started fruit farming, which he did until his retirement at the age of 77.
Franklin was a member of the Michigan Farm Bureau, the Mason County Zoning Board, Mason County Soil Conservation, the Horticultural Society, the Summit School Board, and the Ludington Fruit Exchange Board of Directors. He was a member of the Cornerstone Baptist Church.
In his free time, he enjoyed tennis, hunting, fishing, traveling and flying his own airplane.
In addition to his wife, Elsa Mae, he is survived by two sons, Dennis (Nancy) Houk of Pentwater and George (Marsha) Houk of Ludington; one brother, John Russell (Florence Mary) Houk of Ludington; seven grandchildren, Shauna (Mark) Wetters, Sharon (Jay) Shillinger, Kayla (Justin) VandePol, Laurel (Tom) Taylor, Erin (Peter) VandeKapple, Stephanie (Willie) Reed and Alison (Jim) Herrick; 10 great-grandchildren, Joshua, Sierra, Luke and Ryan Wetters, Kayleigh, Caleb and David Shillinger, Luke Taylor, Rachel and Ty Reed; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Franklin Houk will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15 at the Cornerstone Baptist Church with the Rev. James Carlson officiating. The interment will be in Summit Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, Dec. 14 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Cornerstone Baptist Church or the charity of their choice.
