In 1860, he was a teacher living in Southampton Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 9" tall and had dark hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Chambersburg August 6, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 12 as a private with Co. D, 126th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 20, 1863. He also enlisted in Oakville, Cumberland County, August 27, 1864, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 3 as 1st sergeant of Co. F, 207th Pennsylvania Infantry. Shot in the right foot during the final assault on Petersburg, Virginia, April 2, 1865, he was hospitalized at Slough Barracks U.S. Hospital, Alexandria, Virginia, April 6, 1865. There, surgeons amputated the left front part and the four smaller toes of his foot. He transferred to Chestnut Hill U.S. Hospital, Philadelphia, May 21, 1865, where he was discharged the service by surgeon's certificate June 20, 1865.

He married Charlotte Ann "Lottie" Wilson February 16, 1868, in Fannettsburg, Franklin County, and fathered Anna W. (b. 1869), Bruce R. (b. 1871), Frank Wilson (b. 04/17/73), Dora Irene (b. 02/24/77), and Ralph Hoyt (b. 01/25/79).
