Born to Jesse Asbury Ferrel and Susanna Ferrel 'nee Powell in Wisconsin, he watched his father go off to fight in the Uncivil War.

As a child he moved with his family into Gentry County, Missouri and as a teen into the Cooscoowee District, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, settling as a young man near Alluwe,

Here he met and married a young widow Elizabeth Brown 'nee Cox and to this union was born my Great Grandfather Jonathan Asbury Farrell.

James Harvey Ferrel passed away a little more that a year after his only child was born, possibly from Hemachromatosis, which his grandson James Aaron Farrell also died from.
