Biographer, author. He wrote several best-selling books including 'Stolen Flower Man', 'The Iceman', and 'The Butcher'. He was considered an expert on serial killers, sexual predators, and Mafia culture. He made appearances on numerous documentaries and television shows on these varied subjects. In 2005 he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's Disease), and with cancer in 2009, but he continued writing despite his illnesses. His final effort was a memoir, 'The Killer Within: In the Company of Monsters', released in 2011.
