Oscar Joseph Hillenbrand was the second son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Hillenbrand and he was born in the town of Bristol, Dane county June 29, 1900. His age was 27 years and 11 days. His parents moved to this village while he was still a babe and Sun Prairie has always been his home. He was a graduate of our high school and a member of the class of 1921. After graduation, he followed the lead of all industrious young men and went out into the world to find his life work. About 5 years ago he began work in the Ed. Rennebohm drug store in Madison and when he was called by death was a trusted and valued assistant in that institution. October 23, 1922 he was united in marriage to Miss Madge Cobb of this village. Two children were born to them, Helen now 3 and Robert, 1 year old. Their happy home, now broken, was in Madison. Besides his bereaved family, he leaves one sister, Mrs. Laura Affholder of Madison and one brother, Ernest Hillenbrand of this village, and Mary, at home in Lake Mills. A double funeral was held yesterday morning at Sacred Hearts Church and the hundreds of relatives and friends that came to pay tribute to the memory of these young men bore much testimony of that kindly fellowship thrown around those in deep affliction and brought comfort and consolation to those who mourn. Floral tributes were also many and beautiful. A Requiem High Mass was read with Rev. Fr. Hillenbrand of Burlington, as celebrant, Fr. Hess of Waterloo as Deacon, and Fr. J. Voelker of Waukesha as sub-Deacon. Fr. Hess delivered the sermon, which gave comfort and consolation to the bereaved. Interment was made in the respective family lots in Sacred Hearts Cemetery. Those who bore the remains of Oscar to his last resting place were Harold Engel, Sanford Rutlin, Eugene Hillenbrand, Leslie and Olive Voelker and Norbert Weisensel. Many friends of the deceased and their families from Madison, Oregon and Lake Mills, besides the adjacent countryside attended the funeral.
