Washington Arthur Rummel was born in the first year of the present century, and
his tremendous energy and ability have carried him rapidly along the road to
financial and business success. He is a leader in the affairs of South Bend, and
is president and manager of Rummel, Incorporated, at 309 Lincolnway East and
2923 Mishawaka Avenue.

He was born in Elkhart County, Indiana, February 22, 1901. His father, John C
Rummel, is a well-known figure in South Bend's commercial affairs, where for
twenty years he has been a dealer in furnaces.

Washington Arthur Rummel attended the grade schools in Wakarusa, Indiana, and a
rural school of Green Township, Saint Joseph County. He entered high school at
North Liberty, Indiana, but finished his course at the South Bend High School.
He also attended the South Bend Business College and later Manchester College at
North Manchester, Indiana.

He served a complete apprenticeship in his father's business. He learned the
sheet metal trade in all its branches, particularly in its application to
furnace construction and installation and air conditioning, and was quite a
young man when he was taken into the firm of John C Rummel & Son. In January
1929, he sold his interest to his father and then embarked in an independent
business career, establishing his shop and sales room at 2923 Mishawaka Avenue.
In October 1929, he incorporated under the name of Rummel, Incorporated, of
which he has since been president and manager, the main office being at 309
Lincolnway East. This company specializes in warm air heating and air
onditioning. Mr Rummel has made a special study of air conditioning and warm air
heating engineering, and is probably the outstanding authority on warm air
heating, being recognized as such by the architects and builders of South Bend.
He has taken a very active part in the work of the organizations known as the
Indiana State and National Warm Air Heating and Sheet Metal Associations.

Outside of his own business Mr Rummel has cooperated with other public-spirited
businessmen in matters of local improvement. He is a member of the River Park
Business Men's Association, the First Brethren Church, the Fraternal Order of
Eagles, and has been a leader among the younger circles of his church and is a
former teacher in the Sunday school. In 1913 he was a member of the State
Militia of South Dakota and in 1924 enlisted in the Nineteenth Division of the
United States Naval Reserves.

He married, November 21, 1926, Miss Viola Marie Pofahl. She was born in Kenosha,
Wisconsin, daughter of Dr and Mrs Frederick W Pofahl, of South Bend. They have
two sons, Arthur Lee, born April 22, 1928, and Weir Allen, born December 26,
1929, and a daughter, Marguerite Alice, born March 6, 1931.
