Listed as "Unnamed infant" in Fort Hill Cemetery records, the 5-month-old baby boy interred here was the first of five children born to General A.J. Alexander, a Civil War and frontier cavalry officer, and his wife, the former Evelina Throop Martin. Of the three daughters and two sons born to the Alexanders, only the last--their son Upton--survived to adulthood. Buried beside his unnamed infant brother 43 years later, his initials, U.A., can be seen on the granite footstone in the background. The headstones of the Alexander children who died during the Victorian years have weathered to various states of illegibility, as marble does not withstand the elements as well.
