Miles was one of ten children born to Samuel Inman and Esther Baker. He was born in Ohio and at the age of 8 moved with his family to Dane County, Wisconsin.

On 15 Nov 1866 he was married to Maggie Philo of Lakeview, Wisconsin. Maggie and Miles lived in Wisconsin until 1870 when they moved to Fremont County, Iowa. To this union were born six children Frank D, Oscar Samuel, Clyde Henry, and three children who died in infancy.

Miles died suddenly from over exertion and heart trouble. He was helping his son and others mow away hay when he sat down to rest. He was found lying down, and passed away peacefully at the age of 73 years 3 months 29 days.

Miles lived in Randolph for 11 years, where Maggie died in 1908. The last six years of his life he lived with his son Clyde on a farm north of Thurman.
