Edith B. Barnett walked through the gates of heaven Nov. 10, 2010, welcomed by a host of family and friends, including her son, Pat. "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints." Psalm 116:15. Edith was born to Anna Lucretia (Sloop) and H.O. Patterson on Sept. 15, 1920, near Weatherford, Okla. She attended schools in Weatherford, graduating from Southwestern College of Oklahoma in 1942. She was married to William Barnett on March 3, 1945, in Chicago, Ill. Continuing her education, she graduated with a Master's Degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1953. Edith was an educator with a lifelong passion for learning and for teaching. She taught in several small Oklahoma towns before she and Bill moved their family to Pueblo to teach in District 60 from 1953 until her retirement in 1981. Edith was a woman of faith in Jesus Christ as her Savior. She was active in Baptist churches her entire adult life as a teacher and leader. She was also active in DU Chapter P.E.O., Delta Kappa Gamma, and other educational organizations. In her retirement years, she was a dedicated volunteer at the Assistance League's Bargain Box, and was especially proud of the work she did for Operation School Bell. Edith was predeceased by her parents, five brothers, one sister, their spouses, and her beloved son, Pat. Surviving are her husband of 65 years, William Barnett; daughters, Virginia Lou (Randall) Gunther and Neta Sue (Dennis) Shearer; daughter-in-law, Becky (Steve) Hahn; grandchildren, Mandy (Larry) Anderson, Becky (Frank) Cortese, Beki (Chris) Harding, Robert (Ann) Gunther, Brian and David Barnett; great-grandchildren, Caden, Brayden and Aden Harding, Kylie and Jason Anderson, Ava and A.J. Cortese. Edith will be remembered for her generosity, her gracious hospitality, her passion for education, and her love for children. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Edith's memory to Operation School Bell Assistance League of Pueblo, 515 North Chester Avenue, Pueblo, CO 81003. Edith's family wishes to give a heartfelt thank you to the incredible staff at the Chateau at Sharmar for three years of loving care and to the staff at the Joni Fair Hospice House for extra ordinary care in her last few days. A celebration of her life and home going will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010, at T.G. McCarthy Chapel. Interment will follow at Imperial Memorial Gardens.
