Harold Garvin Gaines, 88, of 649 N. Norris Drive, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at his residence.

Born in Norris, he was a son of the late Garvin Whitfield and Ollie Griffin Gaines. Mr. Gaines was a life-long and faithful member of First Baptist Church in Norris, and served in many leadership positions. He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps Camp in Oconee County, and was an independent grocer in Norris for twenty years. He was one of the original Commissioners for Easley-Central Water District, beginning in 1958.

His career with Easley-Central Water District began in 1964 as the Superindendent of the plant at Norris. He retired in 1994, but continued to serve as a consultant until his passing.

Surviving are his beloved wife, Lois Dalton Gains, of the home; daughters and son-in-law, Rebecca Platts of Liberty, and Susan and Stan Yates of Norris; seven grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Roger Whitfield Gaines; a sister, Pauline Gaines Algood; and a brother, Hershel Maddox.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today, in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home in Easley, conducted by the Rev. Royce Addis and the Rev. Virgil Merck. Burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park. The body is at Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown, where the family will receive friends Wednesday, from 1 to 2 p.m., prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Building Fund of Norris First Baptist Church, Drawer E, Norris, SC 29667; or, to Liberty Camp Gideons, c/o Larry Henderson, 282 Cherokee, Liberty, SC 29657. The family is at the home. Published in The Greenville News on January 29, 2003
