The fatal burning of little Christine Pernelle Lafon, 4-year-old daughter of Mr and Mrs Oscar K Lafon, of Waiteville, this county, on Wednesday evening, March 17, has wrung many hearts with sorrow. The family reside about a mile from Waiteville. On Wednesday evening after 5 o'clock Mrs Lafon went out to milk the cows, first taking precautions to see that the fire in the fire-place was reduced to a few dull embers. She took with her her little son, for the first time leaving Christine by herself. The good mother had warned the little girl about fire as she departed. About 5 minutes later she heard the child crying, and starting back to the house met the poor little tot coming down the garden path with her clothing burned off from below the arms down. The child's body was horribly burned, yet she ws no longer crying all pain having disappeared after the flames had smitten deep into the flesh. The little one told her mother she had struck some matches - and it was so. In a drawer supposed to be above her reach were matches and her baby fingers had clutched one or two of these which she struck, thus setting fire to her dress.
Dr C C Ballard of Gap Mills was summoned by telephone and came in two hours, but soon saw there was no room for hope. Mortal aid could do no more than maker her comfortable until the end, and at 20 minutes after midnight on Thursday morning, March 18, 1915, little Christine passed into the arms of the Everlasting Father.
