From the Dade County Advocate, January 5, 1911 --
Alexander Cowan was born in Sullivan County, Tennessee February 7, 1841, and died at his late home two miles north of Dadeville January 1, 1911, at 5 o'clock a.m. age 79 years, 10, months and 24 days. He had lived in Missouri since 1852.
He was married to Miss Virginia E Maze on October 28, 1856. To them were born eight children, five boys and three girls. Three of these children died in infancy, of those living all are married except one, a daughter who lived at home with her father.
His wife died November 23, 1902. He was of a family of eleven, all are now dead except one brother, who lives in Tennessee.
He had been a professor of religion for many years, and was at the time of his death a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church at old New Hope. Uncle Alec was one of our oldest and most highly respected citizens. He had been identified with the interests of this southwest country for nearly sixty years, and had not only witnessed its development and progress, but by his wise and industrious and upright life had added thereto.
He has left to his children, kindred and friends the example of a noble life, and we doubt not he last heard the welcome plaudit of his lord and master, "Well done, good and faithful servant." Funeral services were conducted by Bro. Russell at his late home, after which his remains were laid to rest beside those of his sainted wife in the old Morris cemetery, there to await the resurrection call.
