George Raymond Albright, 92, passed away in the early hours of Nov. 7, 2010, from an illness, in Ogden, Utah.

Ray was born May 3, 1918 in Capps, Arkansas, to Ralph V. and Lily C. Albright. He was 3 years old when his father died. He attended grade school in Capps. He recalled exploring and roaming the hills of Capps when he was young, and often hunted cottontail rabbits and squirrels. His interest in birds and nature began at an early age. Ray attended high school at School of the Ozarks from 1932 to 1936.

He then decided to join the Army, serving first from 1936 to 1938, then from 1941 to 1958. He advanced in rank from private to major during that time. He went to Vancouver Barracks, Wash. He was sworn in and grouped there, then sent to Fort McDowell, Calif., for transport to Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. He played both snare drum and bugle in the drum and bugle corps. He attended clerical school to learn typing, business English and company administration. When he finished his enlistment he was discharged as a clerk. He joined the regular Army Reserves shortly thereafter and stayed there until he was called to active duty in 1941.

He married Jewell Erma O'Neal of Astoria, Oregon on Aug. 2, 1941 at Kelso, WA. They were transferred to Helena, MT in July 1942, where their first son, David R. Albright, was born on Jan. 25, 1943. At this time Ray served in the Quartermaster Corps.

He was accepted to Officer Training (OCS) at Fort Lee, VA, reporting March 22, 1943. From there he went to further training in Omaha, NE, then to Fort Custer, MI, then to New York City, then to St. Joseph, MO, returning to New York State to serve at Army Descipline Barracks at Greenhaven, NY. His and Jewell's second son, Richard D. Albright, was born on Jan. 17, 1947 at West Point, NY.

Ray continued his service in the Army with overseas assignments to Seoul, Lorea, then Sendai, Japan, then returned to Korea in 1953. He was promoted to captain at this time. He returned to the U.S. in 1953 to the Ogden Arsenal in Ogden, Utah, as surplus property officer. In 1954 he went to Germany, and his family followed four months later. He served at Giessen Quartermaster Depot, then Frankfurt, Germany at which time he was promoted to major. He was in Germany for three years before returning to Ogden. Maryann Elizabeth joined the family Aug. 4, 1956.

Ray retired from the U.S. Army in December 1958. He accepted a GS-7 position at the Surplus Sales Office at Pier 91in Seattle, Wash., in 1961. The office closed in 1965, and he returned to Ogden to be in charge of a new quality control program at the Ogden Defense Depot. He retired from the Defense Depot in January 1979.

Jewell Passed away on Jan. 20, 1970. He later married Hilda Berkenpas Berlin on Oct. 27, 1972, in Las Vegas, Nevada. He and Hilda were married for 37 years until her death in October 2009.
