Grandma Kirchhoff, aged 75 years, 6 months, 20 days, died April 28, 1904, at the home of her youngest son, Wm. Kirchhoff, on the same farm in South Wheeling, where she had lived for over fifty years. She died in the same room where her grandson, Carl Zersen was born, exactly one year before and her funeral was held on the 23rd anniversary of her son's wedding.
Miss Sophia Prellberg was born in Schulenburg Amt Calenburg, Hanover, Germany, Oct. 8, 1828. She married Wm. Kirchhoff and they were among the early settlers of this region. Her husband died Sept. 17, 1881, and the widow continued at the old homestead. She was the mother of one daughter, Mrs. Christine Busse, and four sons, Henry, deceased, George, Louis deceased, and William. Also 24 grandchildren and 31 great grand children. The funeral took place Sunday. There were about 75 teams in the procession from the house to St. Peter's church; about 40 more teams brought a large concourse of relatives, neighbors and friends to pay their last tribute of respect to the deceased. The body was laid to rest in the Lutheran cemetery.
