Martin "Marty" Swanson, 82, of Buffalo Township, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010, in Alle Kiski Medical Center, Allegheny Valley Hospital, Harrison Township. He was born Feb. 7, 1928, in Redbank Township, son of the late Anthony and Annie (Dryburg) Swanson. He was a resident of Buffalo Township for 43 years. He was a coal miner for Bethlehem Steel for 30 years. An Army veteran of World War II, he served during the occupation of Japan, guarding prisoners being held as war criminals. He was a member of Tarentum VFW Post 894 and loved hunting, gardening, cooking, canning, chopping wood and country music. Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Elizabeth Ann (Frye) Swanson; children, Hazel (Andrew) Zaccardo, of Long Beach, Calif., Debbie Houston, of California, Marty (Lelia) Swanson, of Lone Pine, Calif., Sheila (Chuck) Vancamp, of North Dakota, Dennis Swanson, of California, Diana "Two Gun" Swanson, of Brentwood, Suzie Claypoole, Cindy Gamble and Linda Vardis; 17 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters, Grace Marsico, Mable Doverspike, Ruth Zion, Minnie Vallies, Kathlene "Detzey" Young, Gloria Shish and Anna Mae Geracia; and brothers, Anthony "Sonny", Leo, John "Jack", Lindy and Ernie Swanson. Relatives and friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. Saturday until service at 10 a.m. in the DUSTER FUNERAL HOME INC., Tenth Avenue at Corbet Street, Tarentum, 724-224-1526. Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home by Elder John Pernick, pastor of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness, Cheswick.
