Civil War Union Brevet Major General. A longtime career United States Army officer at the start of the Civil War (he had graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1826), he served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Topographical Engineer Corps for much of the war. He reached his highest commissioned rank of Colonel, US Volunteers while serving as an Aide-de-Camp to Major General John E. Wool (who happened to be one of the few Civil War Generals older than Cram). He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865. On January 13, 1866 he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army and Major General, US Volunteers for "faithful and meritorious services during the war".
