Wilson Named AF Security Deputy

Col. Harry A. Wilson has assumed duties as deputy chief of staff, logistics for USAF Security Service.

He replaced Col. Edward M. Jacquet, who assumed command of the 6960th Support Group at Kelly AFB.

Col. Wilson was born in Shamokin, Pa. on Dec. 30, 1921. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on My 5, 1940. Rising rapidly through the enlisted grades, he was a master sergeant by the time he was 20. He later served in the position of sergeant-major of the Air Force Combat Command at Bolling Field, Washington, D.C.

In 1942, Col. Wilson was graduated from Officer Candidate School at Miami Beach and was commissioned a second lieutenant before his 21st birthday.

During World War II, he served on the staff of Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in London, and was a member of the advance party that moved the headquarters to France. He later served with the 1st Tactical Air Force as it moved across Europe.

Col. Wilson was with the original cadre of officers that established the United States Air Force Security Service as a major air command at Brooks AFB, in 1949.

He attended the Armed Forces Staff College at Norfolk, Va., in 1954. From 1954 to 1958, he served with Allied Forces, Southern Europe in Naples, Italy.

Prior to his present assignment, Col. Wilson was commander of the 6921st Security Wing, Misawa AFB, Japan.

In 1952, he had the distinction of being the youngest lieutenant colonel in the Air Force, at age 29.

Col. Wilson is a 1962 graduate of the University of Maryland, and holds a master's degree in Management from the University of Southern California.

His decorations include the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

He is married to the former Helen L. Olmstead of Jersey Shore, Pa. They are the parents of two teen-age children, Bonnie B., 18, and James B., 16.

Col. Harry A. Wilson USAF Ret. passed away, Sunday, August 04, 2002. He was born on December 30 1921 in Shamokin, Pennsylvania and enlisted in the Army Air Corps in June 1940. He rose rapidly through the enlisted ranks attaining the grade of Master Sergeant by age 20. Harry went to Officer Candidate School and received his commission before his 21st birthday. During WWII, he was assigned to SHAEF Headquarters, London and was a staff member of the Advanced Party, which moved its HQ to France. He then served with the First Tactical Air Force as it moved across Europe. Harry was with the original cadre of officers that established the USAF Security Service as a major Air Command at Brooks AFB in 1949. In 1953 he was instrumental in planning the movement of material in the successful relocation of HQ, USAFSS from Brooks AFB to Kelly AFB. From 1954 to 1958 he served with distinction as Logistics Plan Officer with Allied Forces/Southern Europe in Naples, Italy. It was here that he received his promotion to Colonel. The youngest man ever to achieve that rank in the Air Force. From there, Harry went on as Director of Systems Integration for the BOMARC/SAGE Air Defense System and Director of Programs for the Electronic Systems Division at Hanscom Field, Massachusetts. He was then assigned to the Pentagon in Washington, DC as a Systems Management Officer for DCS/Systems and Logistics HQ. Reassigned to USAFSS in July 1966 where he served outstandingly as the DCS/Material of the Pacific Security Region. In 1968 he was assigned as the Commander, 6921st Security Wing at Misawa AFB, Japan. His final tour of duty took him back to San Antonio with the group he helped found, as the DCS/Material at HQ, USAFSS. Throughout his 30-year military career he demonstrated outstanding dedication, loyalty and devotion to the Air Force and his country. After his retirement in 1971, Harry went on to a distinguished teaching career at San Antonio College where he taught management. He retired from teaching in 1986 but he always maintained that teaching was far more rewarding than all the years he spent in the military. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Helen Louise Wilson. Harry is survived by his wife, Patricia Marie Wilson of San Antonio, TX; son, James B. Wilson and his wife, Catherine Potter of San Antonio, TX; daughter, Bonnie Parent and her husband, Richard of Dallas, TX; grandsons, Richard, Robert and Ross Parent and their families, all of Dallas, TX; step-daughter, Patti Steves of San Antonio, TX; step-son, Bill Hasbrook of Atlanta, GA. The family wishes to thank the staff of Arden Courts and Heartland Hospice for their caring and support.
