Michael was probably born in Burke County, NC. He migrated to what is now Swain County with his father and other family members between 1820-1840 when the Cherokee lands opened up for settlement. He first married Susannah Amburn in August, 1819 and they had the following children: Levi, William, Avery, Amon, John, Elizabeth, Emeline, and Mary "Polly". He next married Catherine Hyde, mother of six children, and they had four more children: James Manley, Soloman Leander, Catherine Haseltine, amd Clorine. Catherine also had a daughter Josephine whose father was a Burns, but she assumed the Cline surname. He is most likely buried beside Catherine in the Wiggins-Watson Cemetery in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park in Swain County, NC.
