Son of Lewis Roger Slaton Sr of East Point GA, grandson of William E Slaton # 10186539

District Attorney (Solicitor General) 1965 to 1996, Fulton co, Atlanta GA, wrote the first search and seizure laws for the state.
Mr. Slaton was a native of East Point, Georgia, and a 1939 graduate Russell High School. North GA College, GA State University (B.S.), and Emory Univ Law School (J.D). Mr. Slaton was in private practice for nearly 20 years, then served as First Assistant City Attorney for Atlanta. In 1962, he ran unsuccessfully for a Superior Court judgeship in Fulton. April of 1965, Governor Carl Sanders appointed Mr. Slaton as Fulton County District Attorney to complete the term of the previous District Attorney who had died while in office. He would hold that position for the next 31 years and face election opposition only once, during his first election campaign in 1966, and never lost another election.

Mr. Slaton hired Clarence Cooper, now a judge in United States District Court in Atlanta, as the first African-American assistant district attorney in the county in 1968. By the time he retired, a full 50% of his attorney staff were minorities or females.

He gradually effected the title change from "Solicitor General" to Attorney General, as he explained to the manager of this memorial at a family reunion in Tyrone GA, and while holding that office, Mr Slaton did not believe that Wayne Williams was responsible for the disappearance and murder of all 24-29 of the "Missing" wave that stunned Atlanta from 1979 to 1981, but he was convinced that a disturbed and dangerous man was in custody. The pattern killings stopped after Williams was imprisoned.

At its meeting, July 16, 2003, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to name the Fulton County Courthouse for Lewis R. Slaton, the former district attorney who died last year at age 80.
