Shirlie Jeanette (Tebbs) Verley passed away on November 10, 2010 at her home in Chehalis, Washington. She was born February 16, 1931 in Goldendale, Washington, first child of the late Cedric McEwen Tebbs and Anna Loretta (Thomson) Tebbs. She grew up in Goldendale and attended high school in White Salmon, Washington where she graduated Salutatorian of her class in 1949, and where she met Gene Ray Verley, to whom she was married on August 31, 1950 (his birthday).
Shirlie received her Bachelor (1962) and Master's (1968) degrees in Education from Central Washington State College (now University). She taught elementary grades in San Leandro, California (1958-1964), and Chehalis (at Cascade Elementary and R.E. Bennett, 1964-67), eventually "graduating" to W.F. West High School, where she was chair of the English department for many years, and taught English classes from 1967 until her retirement in 1989. She was a dedicated and innovative teacher, respected and admired by all who knew her.
Shirlie spent a number of summers in Europe as a study-tour teacher and chaperone with groups of high school and college students from Lewis County and elsewhere. She was a lifelong student herself, interested in many topics. She loved snow skiing and line dancing, aerobic exercise and gardening, and did them all for as long as she was able.
Shirlie remained active in many organizations before and after retirement. She was especially involved in genealogy and she and Gene spent a week every year (after wintering in Lake Havasu City, Arizona) at the LDS Library in Salt Lake City researching their family histories. Shirlie was a member of the Lewis County Genealogical Society, Daughters of the Pioneers of Washington and Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also an active member of the St. Helens Club in Chehalis and the Clara Armstrong Guild of Children's Hospital, Delta Kappa Gamma, and a past member of the Lewis County American Association of University Women. She attended the Grace Foursquare Church in Centralia, where she taught adult Bible Study classes for many years.
Shirlie was preceded in death by her brother Willis Larry Tebbs (1938-2002). She is survived by her husband of 60 years and their three children, Susan Kay Verley, Steven Ray (Debbie) Verley and Shane Curtis (Cynthia) Verley, all of Chehalis; three grandchildren, Zane Verley, Adam Verley and Sara (Verley) Hinkey; ten great-grandchildren, her other brother, Donald Cedric (Sandra) Tebbs, of Granite Bay, California, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Her many friends in Lewis and Klickitat counties and her entire family will miss her very much.
A memorial service will be held at Grace Foursquare Church, 3030 Borst Ave. in Centralia, at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 17. A second, smaller service and burial will take place in White Salmon, Washington on Friday, November 19.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Assured Home Health/Hospice through the Visiting Nurses Foundation or the American Cancer Society .

Correction her brother Willis Larry Tebbs(my dad) was born in 1939.

Today 6-21-2017 Shirley's son Shane C. Valley passed away.
