Martin L. Deck was born near Bloomfield, Tenn. in 1848. He and Miss Eleanor Casner were married in Darlington, Ind. in 1873. About three years after their marriage they moved to Illinois and settled on a farm near Cerro Gordo. They resided there for 10 or 12 years and then moved to Decatur.
Mr. Deck laid out an addition to the city and engaged in other real estate transactions. He was a good judge of real estate values and often acted as an appraiser of real estate for a building and loan association.
Mr. Deck and his wife were among the most prominent members of the First English Evangelical Lutheran church. Both were enthusiastic workers in the church, and they donated the ground on which the present church stands at the corner of Main and William streets.
Mrs. Deck passed away many years ago. Mr. Deck has been making his home in California for the last 10 years, but has made a number of trips on visits to his children. About five years ago Mr. Deck was married again.
He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. J.O. Spence of Decatur and Mrs. George Fulk of Bethany.
Mr. Deck always was interested in civic affairs and stood high in the community. Many of his old friends are still living here.
The body will be brought to the Brintlinger & Sons funeral home to await the completion of funeral arrangements.
