William Niccum, son of Michael Niccum, Jr., and his wife Phoebe, was born in Ohio, about 1818, as was his first wife, Elizabeth Smith. They were married at Danville, Illinois on Sept. 12, 1833. Following her death, William Niccum married Maria Smith on June 2, 1836, also in Danville. He later married Matilda Smith Billings in Vermilion County, Indiana on the 9 Feb. 1891. It is believed the three Smith women were sisters.

The family was enumerated in the Vermilion County, Illinois census of 1840 and 1850, but could not be found in the 1860 census.

By Maria, his second wife, he had two sons and five daughters.

He is listed in the McHeffie's (1874) directory of Vermillion County, Indiana. He moved to that County in 1872. He must have left Illinois in 1851, however, because Beckwith's (1879) history of Vermilion County, Illinois says that the family removed to Indiana when the oldest son was 18 years old. (Born 1834)
