Joseph was the son of Albert Aloysius Buckman & Maude Elizabeth Williams. He married Dorothy Cecilia Finnigan on 15 November 1932 & they had 12 children. Joseph died of a heart attack.

Joseph Claude Buckman owned Buckman's Package Store in Monroe City, Missouri. He served on the Board of Directors for the Missouri School for the Deaf in Fulton Missouri. He was an Honorary Colonel on staff with the Governor, Warren E. Hearnes. He was at a meeting of Democrats in Palmyra Missouri, when he became ill. He passed away 22 June 1970 at a hospital in Hannibal Missouri.
