Funeral services for Darwin J. Gerdes Sr., of Brainerd, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter with Pastor Kristin Kelsey officiating. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery of Brainerd. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Brenny Funeral Chapel and also for one hour prior to services on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
Darwin James Gerdes Sr. was born on Dec. 11, 1943, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, the son of Henry R. and Wilhelmena (Schienbein) Gerdes. He was called from this life early Sunday morning, Dec. 5, 2004, at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd after a battle with cancer. He had attained the age of 60 years, 11 months, 24 days.
Darwin attended high school at Pillager and later attended auto mechanic school in Wadena and also mechanical drafting school at St. Cloud Technical College. He was confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Pillager. In May of 1964, he was united in marriage to Rose Britton in Brainerd. To this union three children were born. His lifelong work was over-the-road trucking. He drove for many different firms in the north-central Minnesota area. Among the things he enjoyed doing were working with wood, making a variety of projects, doing mechanical repairs, working with leather, country living, horses and he especially enjoyed being with his family and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Wilhelmena; brothers, Ernest, and infant brothers, Joseph and Robert; and a grandson, Joseph Arthur James Clabaugh. Darwin is mourned in passing by his children, Angelia Zetah Gerdes, and her husband, Duane Zetah, Darwin James Gerdes Jr., and Tina Fitch-Perrin, and her husband, Scott Perrin, all of Brainerd; siblings, Virginia Gerdes, of Waite Park, Marilyn, and her husband, Al Gunnink, of Milaca, Russell Gerdes, of Milaca, and Richie, and his wife, Carla Gerdes, of St. Cloud; 11 grandchildren; a stepgrandchild; two great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren; his former wife, Rose Torgerson; special friend, Temple Jacobson. Other close relatives include Jeff Gunn and Gloria Sanoski, Heidi Lenger, Sylvia and Doyle Duke, Gordon E. Hines, friend Paul Fitch, and many other beloved nieces and nephews.
