FUNERAL HELD FOR BOYS WHO BURNED TO DEATH. FAMILY HOMELESS.
Funeral services were held Wednesday for Isaac Rakes, 8, and John Rakes, 4, who were burned to death after midnight Monday when their home at Henry was destroyed by fire caused by an overheated cook stove. Mrs. Rakes, burned about the face and arms, Blanch, 12, arm burned badly, and Ruth, 11 arms, legs and face badly burned, are in Shackelford hospital. A. B. Rakes, who is the Norfolk and Western railway agent at Henry, was unburned and unhurt, as was the baby of the family. Mrs. Rakes, with the baby, was sleeping downstairs when she discovered the blaze. She aroused her husband, but was unable to get upstairs because of billowing smoke. Making another attempt, the mother gained the second floor and smashed open a window, through which 11-year-old Ruth jumped to save her life. Returning through the flames and smoke to the ground floor, Mrs. Rakes gathered up her baby but collapsed inside the burning house. She and the baby were dragged to safety by the husband. Although fears were at first held for the recovery of Ruth, later reports from the hospital indicate that she and her mother and sister will recover. Funeral services for the two boys were held at Calloway in Franklin County, west of Rocky Mount. The family was from Franklin, although their home was in Henry County. Henry itself is near the county line. Loss of $3,000 was caused by the burning of the two-story frame structure.
