Mardell McKay Plein, age 89, resident of Brainerd, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006, at Bethany Good Samaritan Village. Mardell was born on June 26, 1917, in Brainerd to Joseph and Mary (Liners) Lyonais.

Mardell was a member of the Brainerd Ladies Drum and Bugle Corps, the Historical Society, St. Andrew's Catholic Church charter member, St. Margaret's Guild at St. Francis. She served as a hospice volunteer for more than 20 years. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, CCW, Daughters of Isabella and Ray's Square Dance Club.

Preceded in death by her first husband, Peter G. McKay in 1981; son, Gary McKay; daughter-in-law, Joyce McKay; son-in-law, James Herron; two brothers, Art and Ray; four sisters, Vern, Ruth, Ethel and Phyllis.

Survivors include her husband, John P. Plein, of Brainerd; two daughters, Bev (John) Walker, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Jane Herron, of Bemidji, Minn.; two sons, James McKay, of St. Cloud, Minn., John (Peggy) McKay, of Brainerd, Minn.; stepchildren, John J. Plein, of Brainerd, and Joanne Plein, of Escondido, Calif.; 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren.

Memorials preferred to the Alzheimer's Foundation.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, 2006, at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Brainerd with Father Seamus Walsh officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
