Number 1 Squadron
Royal Air Force Regiment
Royal Air Force
He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
SAC Hughes died of injuries sustained in a boating accident while undertaking post-deployment decompression activities in Cyprus. He was swimming in the sea when he was struck by a power boat operated by the Military Training Wing, British Forces Cyprus. An investigation into the accident has commenced.
Aged 20, he was from Y Felinheli, North Wales. SAC Hughes enlisted in January 2009 and served as a gunner in the Royal Air Force Regiment. In November 2009 he was the top student in his squadron mortar cadre and recently completed a six month tour in Afghanistan. During his deployment he served as top cover (machine gunner) on the lead patrol vehicle as well as a signaller on the Medical Emergency Response Team helicopter where he took part in numerous casualty evacuation tasks. He was lauded for his calm professionalism and dedication. Friends remembered his practical jokes and morale-lifting wit. He planned to put his name forward for selection as a squadron sniper. He also intended to complete the Pre-Parachute Selection Course with a view to serving with the UK Special Forces Support Group.
SAC Hughes leaves behind his parents Michael and Emma, brother Adam, other relatives and many friends. His family issued a statement, "Our beautiful, brave, fun-loving son has been cruelly taken away from us, but we know that Scott fulfilled his dreams by serving his regiment and his country. Words cannot express the loss we as a family are feeling at this time and a huge void will be in our lives without Scott forever more."
Funeral with full military honours was held on November 19, 2010 at St Mary's Church,
Y Felinheli, Gwynedd.
