Bernard Lyle Bates, son of Everett Edward and Mildred Susan (Stoops) Bates, was born January 24, 1917 at Sioux Falls, SD. He grew up and was educated in Sioux Falls. He worked for Metz Baking Company until 1942.
Bernard was united in marriage with Marcella Josephine Keating on April 25, 1942. During World War II, Barney worked for the government as a maintenance supervisor and later manager in Defense Housing. After the war, he worked for Kelly Williamson Company in Rockford, IL installing heating equipment and repairing service station equipment. He returned to Sioux Falls where he worked for W.T. Scott Sheetmetal and Petroleum Equipment Company, Dockendorf Equipment and Jinks Equipment Company. He later owned and operated Bates Hardware Store. He retired in 1982 as a civilian employee from the South Dakota Air National Guard. His wife, Marcella, died May 11, 1999.
He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, United Commercial Travelers, Moose Lodge, Shirts and Skirts Square Dancing Club, and a member of the Sioux Falls Sheetmetal and Pipefitters Union.
Grateful for having shared his life are his brother, Richard Bates and his wife, Pauline, Sioux Falls, SD; two sisters, Ethlyn Leao, Sioux Falls, SD and Dorothy Shafer, Lubbock, TX; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife; and one daughter, Bernadine Kay Bates.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather with the family for lunch and fellowship at Our Lady of Guadalupe following the committal service.
